Commissioning of The Rt. Rev. Keerthisiri Fernando as Vicar of St Peter’s Church, Murrumbeena
In a significant event for the Diocese of Melbourne, the Rt. Rev. Keerthisiri Fernando (Former 6th Bishop of Kurunagala Diocese, Church of Ceylon) has been officially commissioned as the Vicar of St Peter’s Church, Murrumbeena. This appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter in his extensive and dedicated ministry.
Reflecting on his journey, Former Bishop Keerthisiri shared, "From my early childhood, I have heard a still small voice calling me to serve the Ultimate Reality. Despite my initial resistance, I eventually accepted this invitation while I was involved in the engineering field of manufacturing cans and tubes." His commitment to full-time ministry began 40 years ago, leading him to passionately engage in pastoral ministry, theological education, immigrant studies, and extensive research and publications.
His ministry has spanned various challenging contexts, including urban and rural settings, tea plantations, and areas affected by wars and youth uprisings. One of his notable experiences was his involvement in youth work at the Kent County Council in Canterbury, UK, in the early 2000s.
Throughout his 35-year journey, Former Bishop Keerthisiri’s family—his wife Arlene, son Sethlath, and daughter Sethsara—have been his steadfast companions. Together, they have lived in 16 different places, embracing each move as an opportunity to serve God and His creation.
Former Bishop Keerthisiri believes that his latest calling to serve the Diocese of Melbourne at St Peter’s Church, Murrumbeena, is a continuation of his mission to expand his boundaries in service of the Kingdom of God. He expressed, "The Ultimate Reality has been granting me many callings within the basic call to work towards the furtherance of the Kingdom of God. I hope and pray that my latest calling, entwined with my experiences and exposures, will be a most rewarding endeavour in God’s Vineyard."
The commissioning ceremony was a testament to former Bishop Keerthisiri’s unwavering dedication and the rich legacy he brings to St Peter’s, Murrumbeena. The congregation and the broader community look forward to the positive impact of his leadership and service.
