The annual Church Feast of St. Francis of Assisi was celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion on Sunday at the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Pathragala. The event was graced by the presence of Rt. Rev. Nishantha Fernando, the Bishop of the Diocese of Kurunagala, along with the small but vibrant community of the church.
The celebration began with a solemn mass led by Rev. Nawin Sanjaya Gamage, the curate of the church, and Rev. Renuka Damayanthi Karunaratne, who both played significant roles in organizing the occasion.
The St. Francis of Assisi Church holds special significance in the hearts of the local community. Consecrated in 2019 with the participation of the Bishop of Kurunagala, Rt. Rev. Keerthisiri Fernando, the church has since become a beacon of faith, love, and compassion in Pathragala. Rev. Lalith Kumara Gunathilaka currently serves as the dedicated priest in charge of the church, providing guidance and support to the congregation.
The church takes its name from St. Francis of Assisi, a revered figure in Christian history. Born in 1181 or 1182, St. Francis is widely regarded as one of the most beloved and influential saints. His life was marked by deep devotion to God, a profound love for nature and animals, and an unwavering commitment to a life of poverty and simplicity.
During the event, Rt. Rev. Nishantha Fernando addressed the congregation, delivering a heartfelt message on the importance of following St. Francis' example in today's world.
