A Call to Build the Church in Mawathagama

The Church of Ceylon has always witnessed God’s faithfulness as small gatherings of believers—often meeting in houses—grew into full-fledged congregations with churches that now stand as living testaments to grace, mission, and community. Mawathagama is one such story still unfolding.

For many years, the faithful in Mawathagama have met as a house church, sharing worship, fellowship, and prayer in homes with great devotion and perseverance. With growing numbers and a deepening spiritual need, it is now time to move from a temporary setting to a permanent home for the congregation.

In a prayerful appeal, the Bishop of Kurunegala invites the wider Church—both clergy and laity, institutions and individuals—to join in supporting the construction of a new church in Mawathagama. This initiative is not simply about building a structure, but about establishing a lasting sanctuary for worship, mission, community service, and spiritual growth.

The need is both urgent and genuine. A suitable plot of land is being considered, and plans are underway. But the journey forward requires the help of all—through financial contributions, prayer, and solidarity.

As many of our established churches today began in house fellowships and small gatherings, this is our opportunity to continue that legacy. Mawathagama, too, deserves to grow into a thriving parish where God’s people can gather openly in faith and love.

Let us come together as one Body to support this step of faith. May the future Church in Mawathagama be built not only with bricks, but with the prayers and generosity of many hearts.
